Doubletree cancelled reservation without informing

Reservation: Doubletree, Washington DC
Traveling from CT
At 6 pm we called the hotel and told them that we were running late due to the bad weather. They said that our room is confirmed.
We reached at 11:30 and were told that we were moved to a different hotel. The person on the desk was extremely rude and gave the manager's card if we needed to discuss further. I asked for a document that says a confirmed reservation can be canceled. She said that it could be done, but no paper/contract etc. Note that by now it is 12 in the night and we have been driving for about 7 hrs.
This other hotel was away from Downtown and also from the conference we were attending (at St. Regis). The new "hotel" is a conference hotel in a university campus. I probably do not need to elaborate more.
Called the priceline customer support. No help, advised me to take up the offer and file a complain online.
